Machine type: | Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) plant |
Client sector: | Consumables/food |
Company: | The company is a manufacturer of premium, hand made chilled and frozen desserts for the catering and supermarket sectors. |
Issue: | When applying to the local water authority for a licence to discharge from a new factory the Water Authority asked gave approval with low limits due to the rural nature of the catchment area. |
Resolution: | Supply of a collection tank with a fully automatic DAF cell. A Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) system works by passing very small air bubbles up through an effluent, causing particles to be taken to the surface. These particles are removed by a scraper mechanism and passed to a container for disposal. The formation of particles is usually aided using either some flocculating chemicals and/or a polyelectrolyte which causes smaller particles to form into clumps which are easier to remove. This was the obvious solution here as the COD could easily be removed. The system operates at flow rates of from 1,000 to 3,000 litres per hour. |
Impact: | Disposal limits met. |
